Every chemical peel is different, but most medium-depth peels follow a predictable seven-day healing cycle. Here is what your skin will likely do over the week following your treatment.
Day-by-Day Healing Timeline
The 7-Day Cycle
- Day 1 (Treatment Day): Skin feels tight and looks slightly red, similar to a mild sunburn. No peeling yet.
- Day 2: Skin becomes very tight and may take on a darker, leathery appearance. This is the dead skin preparing to shed.
- Day 3: Peeling usually begins around the mouth and chin, as this is the most mobile part of the face.
- Days 4-5: Peeling spreads outward to the cheeks and forehead. This is the period of heaviest flaking.
- Days 6-7: Flaking resolves around the edges of the face. The newly revealed skin looks pink, fresh, and exceptionally smooth.

Crucial Aftercare Rules
The most important rule of the healing process is do not pull the peeling skin. Pulling skin before it is ready to detach will tear the live tissue underneath, leading to bleeding, infection, and permanent hyperpigmentation or scarring. Let the skin shed naturally, or trim loose edges carefully with clean cuticle scissors.
You must also avoid direct sun exposure. The new skin is highly vulnerable to UV damage. Use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser and a thick, bland moisturizer (like Aquaphor or Cerave Healing Ointment) to protect the skin barrier while it heals.
